CRESCENDO is artist John Newsom's curatorial exploration of his own works within the Richard J. Massey Collection, an undertaking that emphasizes both the artist and the collector's shared passion for opera as well as operatic exhibition displays and painterly practices. Within this unusual framework the artist has created a show and a book—the one you are holding now—that doesn't conform to the usual hierarchy in which an exhibition catalogue is reduced to mere collateral. Rather, the catalogue is a work of art itself: an examination of artist and collector as individual entities; a working tool for the artist, not unlike a composer's catalogue of notes and musical phrases for the construction of an orchestral arrangement; and a guide, like a libretto, for the viewer within the context of the exhibition.
